Kearney Area Habitat for Humanity...building homes in partnership with God's people in need.

Mel Wiens

I was raised south of Hastings on a dairy farm. I learned that hard work didn't hurt you. Athletics and 4-H were the only things that excused you from work so I was active in both. I went to Hastings for high school and graduated from UNL with a degree in Agronomy and business. I worked for Standard Oil after graduation for five years as a marketing rep, overseeing the sale of petroleum products, fertilizer and ag chemicals, living in Breatrice, Ne. and Maryville, Mo. In 1973 we moved to Kearney. Most of my carreer after moving here was in banking and the farm machinery business. The last 19 years prior to retirement were spent managing the Fairbanks CaseIH dealership in Holdrege.

Lois and I married a week after we graduated. She taught school for 22 yrs, 19 of those were 4th grade in Kearney Public. We have 3 daughters and eight grandchildren. I retired in 2011 and have spent most of my time since at our river property making a place for our grandchildren to "make" memories with us.

Before being asked to join the board, I had volunteered a few times with our church and using my skid steer loader. Since leaving banking, I have not been very active in community activities outside of church so I am looking forward to working with the board.
